There is no single cause for FUS, but several factors to consider:
Age: Although the FUS can occur at any age, is more common in cats that have several years of age.
Gender: FUS occurs equally in males as in females, but due to anatomical differences, obstruction with increased frequency and severity occurring in males.
Obesity: FUS occurs more frequently in obese cats.
Diet: FUS in cats is caused by crystals (gravel) which result in inflammation of the urinary tract. Several interacting factors may contribute to the development of FUS. Two important factors are the high concentration of magnesium struvite components that occur in alkaline urine.
